Change of Major

Henry Samueli School of Engineering

The School of Engineering will only review change of major applications once a year during the Summer. Applicants can only apply to one engineering major for each application cycle. Notifications will be sent before the first day of instruction for Fall Quarter.

Students wishing to declare a dual major in the School of Engineering must meet the requirements listed below. In addition, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 and 3.00 GPA in courses required for the engineering major.

Dual majors are not allowed with Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering: Premedical.

Aerospace Engineering
Requirements Description
Cumulative UC GPA

2.70 GPA

2.70 quarterly GPA in the quarter immediately preceding the change of major request.

Course grades
  • Minimum 3.0 overall GPA in all courses required for the major with no grade below a ‘C’
  • A maximum of 8 units of repeats in courses required for the major
  • Completion of the following courses:
    • ENGRMAE 10
    • Math 2A-B-D
    • Physics 7C-D, Physics 7LC-LD
    • Chem 1A

Due to strict prerequisites, if a student completes more than the minimum listed, the grades for those courses will also be evaluated if they are required for the major.

Other
  • Due to the rigid sequencing of engineering upper-division courses, change of major applications will only be reviewed once a year during the summer. Notifications will be sent before the first day of instruction for Fall Quarter. Applicants can only apply to one engineering major for each application cycle.
  • Must have 90 units or less. Students with entry status as ‘Freshman’ have two opportunities to apply. Once at the end of the Freshman year and another after the end of the Sophomore year. Change of major applications will not be considered once a student’s junior year starts. AP credits and other units earned prior to high school graduation are excluded when applications are reviewed.
  • Transfer students are ineligible to apply.

If the eligible pool exceeds the number of students that can be admitted to the major, the following criteria will apply:

  • Cumulative GPA from all colleges and universities attended
  • GPA in Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering courses
  • Number of repeated courses
  • Volunteer and work experience (especially in the engineering field)
  • Honors/awards/leadership
  • Essay

Biomedical Engineering

Requirements Description
Cumulative UC GPA 2.7 overall and 2.7 quarterly GPA in the quarter immediately preceding the change of major request.
Course grades Minimum 3.0 GPA in prerequisite courses:

  • Math 2A-B-D.
  • Physics 7C-7D, 7LC-7LD.
  • ICS 31-32
Other
  • Students admitted to the major in Computer Science and Engineering will be assigned to the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences or The Henry Samueli School of Engineering based on enrollment.
  • Students with more than 90 units will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, provided they have made substantial progress in courses required for the major.

 

Electrical Engineering
Requirements Description

2.70 GPA.

2.70 quarterly GPA in the quarter immediately preceding the change of major request.
