Change of Major

College of Health Sciences

Due to strict limits on the number of students who can be admitted to the program and rigid sequencing of much of the upper division curriculum, major changes will be ordinarily considered only in the summer immediately preceding the sophomore and junior years.

Change of Major Requirements:

Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing
Requirements Description
Cumulative UC GPA Students must meet BOTH requirements:

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • A minimum quarterly GPA of 2.0 in the quarter immediately preceding the change of major.
Course grades Students must meet ALL of the following requirements at the time of application:

  • Completion of Chem 1A-B-C  OR Chem H2A-B-C with a “C” grade or better.
  • Completion of Bio Sci 93 with a “C” grade or better.
  • Completion of Psych 7A or PSCI 9 with a “C” grade or better.
  • Completion of at least two additional courses in Sociol 1*; PubHlth 1; Philos 4 or 5; Stats 7 or 8*, with a “C” grade or better.

  • Completion of or current enrollment in Bio Sci 97. Planned Fall enrollment in Bio Sci 97 and is acceptable if students cannot enroll by the application deadline due to major restrictions on the Schedule of Classes, however, offers of admission will be contingent upon completed enrollment.
  • A 2.75 average in ALL courses completed that fulfill requirements for the Nursing Science major.
  • Courses taken at another institution that fulfill requirements for the Nursing Science major must be completed with a “B” or better. All science courses must be completed at UCI.
Other
  • UCI change of major students apply to the Nursing Program between June 1 through July 31 for Fall quarter admission. Students are admitted once per year for Fall quarter entry and are notified of admission by September 1st.
  • If the eligible pool exceeds the number of students that can be admitted to the major, the following criteria will apply:
    • Cumulative GPA from all universities attended
    • GPA in Biological Science and Chemistry courses
    • Number of repeated courses
    • Volunteer and work experience (especially in a healthcare environment)
    • Honors/awards/leadership
    • Essay
  • Transfer students interested in applying to the Nursing Science major should apply using the transfer application process, as they are ineligible to apply as a change of major student. Nursing Science students must take required science prerequisite courses at UCI, unless admitted directly to the Nursing Science major as a transfer student.

Pharmaceutical Sciences
Requirements Description
Cumulative UC GPA
  • 2.50 GPA
  • Most recent quarterly GPA of 2.50
Course grades Course requirements:

  • If changing after year 1: Completion of Chem 1A-1C/LC and Bio Sci 93 and 94
  • If changing after year 2: Completion of the above courses, plus CHEM 51A-51C/51LB-51LC and Bio Sci 98
  • If changing after year 3: Completion of the above courses, plus CHEM 51LD and Bio 97 and 99

Must meet BOTH requirements:

  • 3.00 minimum GPA (combined average) for all UCI courses that count toward the major.
  • 3.00 minimum GPA (combined average) for all courses transferred from other institutions that count toward the major.

 

Public Health Policy
Requirements Description
Cumulative UC GPA 2.00 GPA
Course grades

A quarterly GPA of 2.0 in the quarter immediately preceding the change of major.

Completion of the following major requirements with a combined GPA of 2.5 or better: Public Health 1, Public Health 2, and Stats 7/Stats 8.

In addition, students must meet the following requirements:

  • 2.50 minimum GPA for all UCI courses students have previously completed that count toward the Public Health Policy degree.
  • 3.00 minimum GPA for all courses transferred from other institutions that students have previously completed that count toward the Public Health Policy degree.

 

Public Health Sciences
Requirements Description
Cumulative UC GPA 2.00 GPA
Course grades

A quarterly GPA of 2.0 in the quarter immediately preceding the change of major.

Completion of the following major requirements with a combined GPA of 2.5 or better: Public Health 1, Public Health 2, Chem 1A, Chem 1B, Bio Sci 93 and Bio Sci 94.

In addition, students must meet the following requirements:

  • 2.50 minimum GPA for all UCI courses students have previously completed that count toward the Public Health Science degree.
  • 3.00 minimum GPA for all courses transferred from other institutions that students have previously completed that count toward the Public Health Science degree.
